Settling Down
Did you know that
South Africa once was a Dutch colony? They didn't intend to colonize it when they landed in 1652. They only wanted to establish a secure base camp for their passing ships on their trading route to find shelter, and where hungry sailors could stock up on fresh supplies of meat, fruit, and vegetables.
They started trekking North and eventually
settled down. In 1815 the British took over and claimed their sovereignty.

Life may not have been easy at that time, living like nomads for a while until they found a spot to build a
house. At least they didn't have to worry about
mortgages!
